About Elgar - The Music Makers
Taken from Wikipedia:
The Music Makers, op.69, is a work for contralto or mezzo-soprano, chorus and orchestra composed by Edward Elgar. It was first performed at the Birmingham Festival on October 1, 1912, conducted by the composer, with Muriel Foster as the soloist.
The text of the work is the 1874 poem Ode by Arthur O'Shaughnessy, which Elgar set in its entirety. He had been working on the music intermittently since 1903, without a specific commission.
About John Rutter & Magnificat
Taken from Wikipedia:
The Magnificat (also known as the Song of Mary) is a canticle frequently sung (or spoken) liturgically in Christian church services. The text of the canticle is taken directly from the Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:46-55) where it is spoken by the Virgin Mary upon the occasion of her Visitation to her cousin Elizabeth.
John Rutter stated that the intention for his Magnificat was to reflect Mediterranean sunshine and celebration while at the same time keeping alive the spirit of many festivals held throughout Europe to honour the Virgin Mary. His work is full of energy, syncopated rhythms and strong evocative melodies that leaves a smile on the faces of all who hear it.
It was first performed in 1990 in Carnegie Hall, New York, himself conducting. The first UK performance was held one year later in Coventry Cathedral.
St. Helens Choral Society has performed the Magnificat twice, once in 1992 and a second time in 1996.
